Obituary for Barry Albert Stewart

Barry Albert Stewart passed away from heart disease on June 12, 2019 at the age of 64. He was born in 1954 in New Jersey to parents Catharine Marie (nee Good) and James Albert Stewart.

Barry grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, where he attended Seaholm High School (class of 1972). He was an avid cross-country runner and was also an excellent mathematician, placing 3rd in the Michigan Math Prize Competition during his Senior year. Barry also enjoyed being an active member of the youth group at church.

As a child, Barry was fortunate to enjoy many summers with family in St. Petersburg, Florida visiting his grandparents. During these visits, Barry’s mother taught him to swim. He enjoyed reading, math games, and badminton, and even learned to ride a unicycle. He especially loved frequent family visits and joyful holiday meals with his other grandmother in Ohio.

After high school, Barry attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1981. He later moved to Detroit where he resided for several years while working as a computer operator at an accounting firm. He also worked for the Census and as an election worker, eventually moving to Redford Township, Michigan in 2016.

Although Barry struggled his entire adult life with mental illness, when he was on his medication, he was such a thoughtful, creative, intelligent person. He always remained connected to a church community and was a volunteer for the South Oakland Shelter for several years when they were housed at his church. During this time, he also enjoyed camping and canoeing with members of his family. In recent years, he discovered a love for writing music and playing the piano. He received affirmative feedback from an entry in the Great American Song contest. He was also an excellent cook and enjoyed taking cooking classes. He became interested in his heritage and joined the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

Barry is survived by his dear siblings, brother Arthur Stewart of Tampa, Florida, and sister Harriet Stewart of Beverly Hills, Michigan. He is also survived by his loving niece, Katherine Stewart of Beverly Hills.

A private burial was held at Chapel Heights Memory Gardens in Marion, Ohio where Barry was placed next to his beloved parents. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
