Obituary for Maureen Ryan Burkhardt

Maureen Ryan Burkhardt of Bloomfield Village died peacefully August 17, 2019. She was 96 years old. Maureen was born in Detroit on August 15, 1923. She always felt blessed to be born on the feast of the Virgin Mary. She was the 6th child of Robert and Vera Ryan. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings; Roberta Krietch, Miriam Page, Mary Patricia Ryan, Natalie Murphy, Rosemary Kassens and Robert Ryan.

She grew up in Detroit where she graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart on Lawrence Avenue and Marygrove College. When he returned from World War II, she married her neighbor across the street John Burkhardt. Their lifelong romance of over 65 years continued even after his death in February of 2006. They had 6 children: Susan Telford, John (Janis) Burkhardt, Tom (Cheryl) Burkhardt, Greg (Lori) Burkhardt, Rob (Susan) Burkhardt and David (Barbara) Burkhardt.

They eventually moved to Bloomfield where Maureen was active at St. Regis in the Altar Society and instrumental in bringing residents from South Oakland Shelter to St. Regis each summer. She also was an active parent when her children attended St. Regis and Brother Rice.

Many summers as a child and later as an adult were spent at the family cottage in Tecumseh Ontario. These summers brought back many happy memories. She was a devout catholic and enjoyed EWTN.

Maureen leaves behind her children, 15 grandchildren, John (Erin) Telford, Kathryn (Scott) Geideman, Jeffery (Melanie) Telford, Judith (David) Jones, John (Kate) Burkhardt, Meaghan (Joe) Nielsen, Ryan (Megan) Burkhardt, Amelia (Jeff) Bowdell, Adam Burkhardt, Andrew (Christina) Burkhardt, Jennifer Burkhardt, William (Laura) Burkhardt, Anne (Brian Keenan) Burkhardt, Daniel (Becky Janowski) Burkhardt, and Mary Claire Burkhardt and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Mary Elliott (the late Ken) and Jean Ryan (the late Robert) and many nieces and nephews. Missionary Hattie Humphrey joins the family in rejoicing in Maureen’s life and her welcome into eternal life.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Tuesday, August 20th, 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3695 Lincoln Drive, Bloomfield Hills, Wednesday, August 21st at 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
