Obituary for Peter J. Manetta

Peter J. Manetta passed away on May 15, 2019, surrounded with love by his family. He was 88 years old & lived a very full life.

Peter was born December 19, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to parents Vincenzo & Edith Manetta (née: DiPonio). At 23 months old & as an only child he lost his mother & was raised by his relatives. He would often talk about his childhood memories of big Italian family dinners & playing in the alleys. He graduated from Eastern High School.

In 1952 he was drafted into the US Army where he became a draftsman & was sent to Anchorage, Alaska on assignment during the Korean War. After he was discharged, he worked at several jobs before landing a position as an automotive engineer & worked himself up to chief engineer before realizing he could work for himself. He then started his own design engineering company.

He married the late Ann Manetta (née: Mitchell) & raised 4 children together: Colleen, Susan, Janis, & Lisa.

Later, in 1986, he married his present wife; Jacqueline. They built a home together in Shelby Twp that he was very proud of. In 1991, they lost twin boys at 23 weeks gestation & in 1994, they had a daughter together: Katrina. He also took upon his kind heart to bring in his sister in law Jane Dziak to live with them.

His hobbies included golfing, traveling, & spending time with his family & friends. He was committed to transformational work & was a man of his word. You could always count on what he said. His wisdom touched so many peoples’ lives. The grass never grew under his feet. He lived everyday with purpose & action. His witty sense of humor lit up the room & made everyone feel welcome. He was a great inspiration, lover of people, mentor, leader, & a powerful, extraordinary, & remarkable man that was truly one of a kind. Peter was very generous, joyful, and kind. He would often say at the end of his life he wanted to be “all used up”. He certainly accomplished that.

Peter is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline Manetta (née: Dziak) and his daughters, Colleen Manetta (the late Albert Swieczkowski), Janis Kinkela (Gary), Lisa Paglino (Vince), and Katrina Manetta. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Eric Mihelich (Veronica), Christina VanDouser (Daniel), Sean Tissue (Ashley), and Erika Underwood, great-grandchildren, Alexander Mihelich, Conner Mihelich, Carter VanDouser, Amelia Tissue, Brody VanDouser, Evelyn Tissue, James Tissue, and Ada Underwood and many other friends, family, and cousins. Peter is preceded in death by his mother & father, his twin sons, John & James Manetta, his daughter Susan Manetta, & his grand-daughter, Jennifer Barker (née: Tabor).

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Roads) Tuesday, May 21st, at 11am. Burial services with military honors to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may visit Monday, May 20th, 3-8pm at Lynch & Sons.
