Obituary for Sophie Barczyk

Sophie Barczyk died peacefully December 31, 2018 just shy of her 99th birthday. Sophie was born January 4, 1920 in Detroit to Agnes (nee Sulkiewicz) and Felix Skowron.

Sophie was a member of the Queen of Apostles Altar Guild and the St. Florian Quilting Club. She was involved for years in her rose garden and her lawn was the envy of the neighborhood. People would often stop their vehicles and ask if they could walk on her grass to which she always responded with the same answer, "only if you’re barefooted". Sophie was always available to babysit not only her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren but also their dogs. The dogs loved grandma because she would always spoil them with people food and treats. Her response when questioned by the dog owners was always the same, “how would you like to eat the same meal all the time?".

Sofie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. A woman of great faith, who attended Mass regularly and prayed the rosary daily, Sofie was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her children, Larry (Barbara) Barczyk, Ronald (Deborah) Barczyk, and Carol (Gary) Johnson, 8 grandchildren, Karrie Lynn Brown, Melissa Barczyk, Brock Barczyk, Blake Barczyk, Taylor Mary Barczyk Kelly, Lisa Graziano, Erica Armstrong, and Steve Johnson and 13 great-grandchildren, Julie Brown, Grace Barczyk, Brody Barczyk, Connor Barczyk, Sophie Graziano, Charlie Graziano, Declan Armstrong, Killian Armstrong, Isla Armstrong, Trey Johnson, Rhys Johnson, Ivy Johnson, and Edison Kelly. She is also survived by her sister, Helen (the late Norman) Langowski. Sophie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Barczyk.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday, January 4th, 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 3851 Prescott, Hamtramck, Saturday, January 5th at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.

Memorials may be made to the Solanus Casey Center, 1780 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, Michigan 48207.
