Obituary for Denis A. Lanigan

Denis A. Lanigan died January 4, 2018 in Rochester Hills. He was 82 years old. He was born October 27,1935 in Detroit to parents Margaret (nee Magrath) and Alfred E. Lanigan.

Denny was born with cerebral palsy and it was believed he would likely never walk. His parents took him to visit Fr. Solanus when he was three years old. He remembered this visit and remembers pulling on Fr. Solanus' beard. Fr. Solanus told Denny to listen to the doctors, and his parents. Fr. Solanus also told Denny that he would one day not need his leg braces and he would walk. Just a year later, he did begin to walk.

Denny attended St. James Elementary in Ferndale and later Shrine Elementary and Shrine High school, where he graduated. He attended college at The University of Detroit. Denny resided briefly in an apartment in Highland Park and later Royal Oak, where he spent most of his life in his own home. In May of 2000, he moved to Boulevard Health Center in Rochester Hills.

Denny was a clerk at Michigan Bell for over thirty years, before retiring in the late 1980's. He loved his model railroad, reading westerns, travel, but especially out West. Denny enjoyed puzzles, word games, and any kind of jokes and humor. He especially found companionship and joy in the therapy dogs that visited him faithfully for many years.

Denny is survived by his two sisters, Peggy (the late George) Gray of Dearborn and Mairin (Bill) Foley of Indianapolis, three nieces, three nephews, great nieces and nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Margaret Lanigan, and sister, Sheila Lanigan.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 280 E. Square Lake Road, Troy, Saturday (January 13th) at 11am. Friends may visit beginning at 10am. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Memorials in memory of Denny may be made to Therapy Dogs International (, 88 Bartley Road, Flanders, NJ 07836.
