Obituary for Robert B. Ernewein, Sr.

CMSgt Robert B. Ernewein Sr. USAF Ret of Southfield died March 3, 2020. He was 78 years old. Robert was born September 29, 1941 in Buffalo, New York to the late Joseph and Grace Ernewein.

CMSgt Ernewein served in the Air Force for 22 years in many capacities including a tour duty in Vietnam. He was a distinguished graduate of the Air Training Command NCO Academy, graduate of the Senior NCO Academy, Master Instructor and technical course writer, managed the quality control group of the 1961st Comm Squadron and finished his career at the 485th where he was an integral member of the cruise missile program. He and his family lived in different parts of the world including the Republic of the Philippines.

After retiring from the service, Bob as he was then known, moved his family to Michigan and worked for EDS for 14 years as a communications analyst, project and senior telecommunications specialist. Following his work at EDS, he became a military contractor and consultant at TACOM continuing to assist our troops overseas in the Middle East until finally retiring at the age of 71.

Bob served as an Elder and choir member at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Birmingham for over 20 years. He was known as “The Reader” to his congregation because of his amazing voice which was heard on many Sundays and special occasions or holidays.
Bob enjoyed spending his time with family, gardening, traveling and helping neighbors. He was an avid sports fan and train enthusiast.

Robert is survived by his wife Bonnie, three children Robert Ernewein, Kellie (Patrick) Setsuda and Kathleen (Scott) Szafranic, grandchildren Matthew, Elizabeth, Ryan, Krysta and Joseph. He was preceded in death by his sisters Shirley (Anthony) Gugino and Sally Ernewein.

A funeral will be held at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1800 W. Maple Road, Birmingham on Friday, March 6th at 11am. Friends may visit church beginning at 10am. Visitation will be at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Thursday, March 5th from 2pm to 8pm.

Internment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
