Obituary for William J. Schafer

William J. Schafer of Beverly Hills died April 17, 2019. He was 93 years old. Bill was born November 29, 1925 in Detroit to Mary (nee Klein) and Jerome Schafer. He proudly served in the United States Navy.

A native Detroiter, Bill graduated from Annunciation High School in 1943 and the University of Detroit on May 18, 1951, with a degree in Engineering. He was founder and President of WEBCO which he founded in 1959. WEBCO is a manufacturers rep company specializing in material handling equipment for the automotive industry. Bill continued to work at the company with his sons right up until the time of his death.

Bill was active in the Brother Rice and Marian High School Dads Clubs and started the auction at Brother Rice. He was also very involved with the South Oakland Shelter and St. Regis Catholic Church where he served as an usher and had been a member since 1969. An active Boy Scout Leader, Bill was very involved with the wreath and roping sales at St. Regis.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Bill was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Bill is survived by his children Dale Ann (David) Birchler, William Schafer, Michael (Sherry) Schafer, Janice (Oscar) Mittelstaedt, and John (Kimberly) Schafer and grandchildren, Jason, Keith, and Kevin Birchler, Lauren and Jamie Schafer, and Jenelle, Melissa, and Bryan Mittelstaedt. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Jackson and Sadie Birchler, Maria, Gabby, Michaela, and Clara Ponkowski, and Maddie and Evan Brink and brother, Howard (the late Jeanne) Schafer. Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife Aileen, grandson, Spencer Schafer, and sisters, Mary Earle, and Ruth Berndtson.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Wednesday, April 24th, 3-8pm with a Rosary at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3695 Lincoln Drive, Bloomfield Hills, Thursday, April 25th at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
