Obituary for William A. Reid, Sr.

William A. Reid, Sr. died February 8, 2021. He was 88 years old. Born November 23, 1932, to Kathleen E. (nee King) and Ormond J. Reid, Bill attended St. Mary’s of Redford High School, and married Roseanne C. Scully at age 19 following a brief courtship.

At any early age, Bill was an Eagle Scout, Altar Boy, and Paper Boy, laying the foundation for a hard-working family man the rest of his life. He developed an affinity for both the violin and the mandolin, both of which he played well, sometimes as the other half of a duet aside his wife, Roseanne, at the piano. He worked at Chrysler Corporation’s Missile Division while attending college and starting a family, while teaching computers and personnel at Schoolcraft College at night to supplement his income.

He finished his undergraduate degree at University of Detroit Mercy, while Roseanne did the heavy lifting with the kids while also teaching elementary school at St. Michael’s, where they were founding members of the Catholic Family Movement. He then went on to IBM Corporation, where he came to appreciate the power of technology and office automation, slightly ahead of his time. After IBM, Bill went to work in personnel for Ford Motor Company after which he transitioned into a Systems Analyst role following completion of his MBA at University of Detroit Mercy. With a mastery of the application of technology to effectively manage information, he ushered in the use of microfilm, microfiche, the word processor, the mini-computer, and finally the personal computer in automating simple office record keeping and routine tasks at Ford Motor Company for the sake of efficiency and cost savings at scale.

Bill deeply valued education and was very proud that his children attended excellent schools including Mercy High School, University of Detroit High School, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Ferris State University, and Madonna College. After retiring from Ford Motor Company after 30 years, he was the assistant director at The Baptist Manor in Farmington Hills for 5 years. Charity and volunteerism were very important to Bill. He served as Chairman of the annual fundraiser at Mercy High School for many years.

Bill and Roseanne traveled extensively in retirement, continuing their insatiable thirst for knowledge. He was the happiest practicing his Catholic faith and spending quality time with his family, and if asked, despite his other accomplishments, would say he’d like to be remembered for that.

In 2006, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Roseanne. He is survived by three children, Mary Lynne Drumheller (Timothy), William Jr. (Elizabeth Elliott), and Catherine Bruggeman, six grandchildren, Justin, Kevin (Marissa), Cameron, Claire, Michael (Nicole) and Kelly, and three great-grandchildren, Liam, Josephina, and Navice.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic Church, 2215 Opdyke, Bloomfield Hills, Saturday, February 13th, at 11am. Friends may visit beginning at 10:30. Masks and social distancing will be required. For those unable to attend, the Mass will be livestreamed at

Memorials appreciated to Roseanne and William Reid Memorial Scholarship Fund at Mercy High School, 29300 W. Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48336, Attn: Advancement. (Please make checks payable to Mercy High School).
