Obituary for Wilfred "Bill" Farner

Wilfred “Bill” Code Farner, age 90, of East Lansing, MI and formally of Rochester Hills, MI., passed peacefully on Thursday August 10, 2017. Bill was born October 22, 1926 in Royal Oak, MI. He met Donna Joyce Campbell, together they raised and family that spanned 63 years.

Bill proudly served in the Army/Air Force from 1945-1947 and was part of the occupied Germany mission. He was fond of history and travel. After the war, Bill completed a business degree from Michigan State University and a teaching degree from Wayne State University. He had various jobs but loved teaching the most and retired as a Royal Oak Public Schools principal with over 25 years of dedicated service.

Bill loved his family and would always state how important family was. He enjoyed many decades at the Torch Lake cottage with family and friends. He loved the outdoors and stayed active; picking cherries with the grandchildren, afternoon strolls along West Torch Lake drive, sailing or playing golf with friends and family. As he gracefully aged, he cherished the end of day stories on the deck or fire pit reminiscing about how much fun we would all have at the cottage.

Bill and Donna traveled in their retirement years with memorable Rhodes Scholar vacations in Europe, Central America, Canada and USA. They enjoyed various events at Meadowbrook, Detroit symphony, and Rochester OPC. For over 25 years they were faithful members at the Northminister Presbyterian Church in Troy, Michigan. among other venues enjoying the social aspect of many Detroit establishments.

Bill left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was easy to talk too. His kindness, wisdom and words inspired everyone who was lucky enough to have met him. His legacy will live on through the inspiration and love he created in others. Bill was a remarkable man, we only hope to emulate his character and teach our children to be like him. He lives with us.

Bill will be deeply missed. We will always carry your memories in our hearts.

A special thanks to the staff at the Independent Village of East Lansing, we appreciate all you have done for Bill and the family.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Donna Farner. Two loving sons, David (Jamie) Farner, and Stephen (Susan) Farner. He is the proud grandfather to 9 grandchildren, Jamie (Chad) Fulk, Paige Farner, Brooke (Keegan) Farrell, Ashley (Bill) Rule, Erin Farner, and Jonathan Farner. Bill is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and 2 nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Keith Farner.
