Obituary for Vera C. Harkin

Vera C. Harkin died July 2, 2016 at Waltonwood of Royal Oak. She was 96 years old. Vera was born February 2, 1920, in Sandusky, Ohio to parents, Vera (nee Zistel) and Earl L. Curtis.

She was a 1937 graduate of Sandusky High School and a graduate of DePauw University where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Vera went on to study at Katharine Gibbs College and later began working as an Executive Secretary at BF Goodrich. Vera was also an active member of the Piety Hill chapter of the NSDAR.

Recently Vera celebrated her 50th year as an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham. Over the years she served as a Deacon, member of Church Women United and the Rebekah Circle. Vera enjoyed volunteering at the church’s Rummage Sale, Lunch & Learn, Christmas Hand and Hand and as a Vacation Bible School teacher.

In her spare time, Vera enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, gardening, sewing, bird watching and sea shell hunting. She loved to be adventurous and even earned her pilot’s license. Above all, Vera treasured the time she spent with her family and was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Vera is survived by her loving daughters Kathy Filley, Vera Gaspers and Maureen Paul. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Jay, Laura, Philip, Kath, Shelby and Josh and her great-grandchildren Madison and Payton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Earl L. and Vera Curtis and her beloved husband, Gordon J. Harkin.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at The First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, 1669 West Maple Road Birmingham, Michigan 48009 at 10:30am. Luncheon to follow.
