Obituary for Thomas W. McDonald

Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Thomas W. McDonald, of Dorset, Ohio, formerly of Essexville, Michigan, passed away suddenly on Friday August 17, 2012. He was 50 years old. The son of Shirley (Haske) and David McDonald, he was born January 19, 1962 in Midland. On July 1, 1994 in Newport, Rhode Island, Thomas married Devorah (Stalzer) Booth.

Thomas retired in 2006 after serving 26 years in the United States Navy earning several medals and awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Commendation Unit, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (7), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, NATO Medal, Navy Pistol Shot (expert) and Coast Guard Operations Service Medal. He currently was working on the Littoral Combat Ship class ship design for General Dynamics in Fairfax, Virginia, where he was the Combat Systems Lead Engineer.

In his spare time Thomas worked his 162 acre farm which he truly loved and enjoyed, raising the finest Black Angus Cows, Hamshire Pigs and the greenest hay. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and his favorite dogs, Summer and Shelby.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife Devorah, his two children, Shay (David Mathisen) Booth and Shawn Booth, his parents, David and Shirley McDonald, his brother William (Billie Jo) McDonald, and his two nieces Rebecca and Kimberlee McDonald.

The funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church (1705 Nebobish Ave., Essexville, Michigan. (At the corner of Pine and Nebobish.) Friends may visit at church beginning at 12 noon.

Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
