Obituary for Thomas W. Chisholm

The game of golf in Michigan lost a great ambassador Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011.

Thomas W. Chisholm, passed away at his home in Bloomfield Hills, surrounded by his family, May 3, 2011. He was 76 years old. Mr. Chisholm was born May 9, 1934, in Detroit, to Kathleen (nee Long) and C. Harry Chisholm.

Mr. Chisholm was passionate about golf and his loved ones. The Bloomfield Hills resident and former Vice-President of Eaton Corp. was a national leader in joining golf with the environment. He served on the United States Golf Association Executive Committee from 1990-1996, was President of the Golf Association of Michigan in 1989-1990, and has worked as a rules official in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia, and at multiple US Opens.

In recent years, his many service projects in the game of golf have largely focused on promoting the research, education, and improvement of playing conditions of golf courses. He has worked in those areas with the USGA since 1990, and has worked with the GAM in similar capacities since 1975. This work culminated with being named Chairman of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Environmental Institute for Golf from 2004-2006.

He was a Director from 1998-2005 while passionately supporting the Western Golf Association and the Evans-Scholar program throughout his life.

�My Dad�s dedication to the game was only surpassed by his love for his family and friends. His handshake was his word. He embodied honor and integrity, which are the core attributes in the game of golf,� said his son Tom Chisholm Jr.

Mr. Chisholm was a member of Bloomfield Hills Country Club, Seminole Golf Club, Orchard Lake Country Club, and the Royal and Ancient in St. Andrews Scotland.

He was elected to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Carol (LeDuc) Chisholm, daughters, Donna Chisholm and Kathleen (Jack) McInerney, and sons, Tom (Mary Cecile) Chisholm, Jr. and Patrick (Lisa) Chisholm. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Tom, John, Patrick, Claire, Julia, Tommy III, and Kristy, sister, Patricia Palmer, and his loving niece, Heather Smith. Mr. Chisholm is preceded in death by his sister, Jacqueline Solner.

Visitation will be take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday 4-8pm with a service at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Friday at 11am.
