Obituary for Thomas G. Montgomery

Thomas G. Montgomery of Troy died peacefully on February 25, 2012 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 86 years old.

Thomas was born in Glasgow, Scotland to Mary (McComish) and Thomas Montgomery. Thomas was born at home and when he was only three months old his mother and father left by boat to start their own company in the United States. Thomas stayed behind with his older sister Rita in the care of his grandmother McComish and her sister Aunt Meg. His parents came to Detroit, Michigan in 1926 with his older brothers Robert and Hugh.

When he was six years old his parents sent for him and his older sister Rita (13) to cross the Atlantic alone. On the voyage his sister became seasick and unable to watch him. He remembers running all over the ship having a great time until he came face to face with the captain of the ship. From then on it was his duty to keep track of the captain and follow him where ever he went. He remembered every night he had to wear a tie which the captain tied and he sat at the captains table next to the captain for dinner. From then on he had a love for the sea.

Thomas went to Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. He came from a very religious family and wanted to become a priest.

On April 24, 1944 at the age of 18 he joined the US Navy and drove PT boats in the South Pacific during WWII.
He often told the story about one day being on the deck of a submarine, loading bombs by passing them one by one to the next man when all of a sudden one man dropped one of the bombs and everyone froze. He remembers an officer next to him running and grabbing the bomb throwing it overboard.

Thomas was honorably discharged on July 24, 1946.

On May 28, 1949 Thomas married Mary June (Clancy) at St Davids Church in Detroit. During those years dad had purchased a 34ft Cabin cruiser where Tom and Mary would often vacation with all 11 children. They were married for 62 years. They spent 26 of their retirement years in Fort Myers, Florida on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico doing what he loved the most, golfing.

Thomas is survived by his children, Patricia (Thomas) Maxwell, Peg (Thomas) Sokolnicki, Thomas Montgomery, Jr., Cathy Briton, James (Judy) Montgomery, John (Denise) Montgomery, Michael (Michelle) Montgomery, Ed Montgomery, Paul Montgomery, and Rob (Stacey) Montgomery. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mr. Montgomery is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary June Montgomery and daughter, Mary (Dennis) Hrischuk.
