Obituary for Theodore Ted Woehrle

Theodore �Ted� Woehrle of Troy, died September 8, 2010, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Ted was born June 2, 1932 in Homewood, Illinois to Ella (nee Nietfeldt) and Herman Woehrle.

Ted attended Purdue University, where he played football and ran track. He received his Bachelor�s Degree from Purdue in 1954 as one of the first four year Agriculture program graduates in the country.

Upon graduation from Purdue, Ted enlisted in the United States Army and served proudly in Germany from 1954-1956 as a lieutenant artillery officer. After service, he became Superintendent at Point O' Woods Country Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan from 1957-1959, and helped build the golf course there with the great Robert Trent Jones, Sr. From 1959 � 1968, he served as Superintendent at Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Illinois, where he hosted the 1963 and 1967 Western Opens as well as the 1961 and 1965 Women's Western Golf Tournament. In 1959, he joined the Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents and was elected President of the association in 1961. That same year, he helped form the Illinois Turfgrass Foundation, and eventually served as President of the foundation in 1964-1965.

In 1968, Ted became Superintendent at Oakland Hills Country Club in Birmingham, Michigan, where he worked until 1991. At OHCC, he hosted the 1972 and 1979 PGAs, 1985 US Open and the 1981 and 1991 US Senior Opens. After his long career at Oakland Hills, he served as Superintendent at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan until his retirement in 2003. The year before he retired, he hosted the 2002 US Amateur Public Links Championship.

Among his many professional accomplishments, Ted also served as President of the Michigan & Border Cities Golf Course Superintendents Association in 1972. That same year, he also became a GCSAA Director, and served as President of that association in 1977. In an illustrious career that spanned almost 50 years, Ted had hosted ten major golf championships. For his decades of dedication, he was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2007.

A devoted and loving family man of deep faith, Ted was also an active member, volunteer, and elder at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Birmingham.

Ted is survived by his beloved wife, Mary and children, Ted (Pam) Woehrle, Mary Beth (Riston) Smith, Bruce (Kathryn) Woehrle and Chris (Stacey) Woehrle. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kyle, Bernadette, Ellie, Alex, Camille, Juliette and Nicholas, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday 4-8pm. Funeral at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2225 E. Fourteen Mile Road, Birmingham, Saturday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery, Evergreen Park, Illinois.
