Obituary for Teresa Ann Khalaf

The new year began tragically with the sudden, unexpected passing of Teresa Ann Khalaf, age 50. On the afternoon of January 7, 2022, Teresa’s soul reposed to Heaven.

Teresa was born on January 5, 1972 in Baltimore, Maryland. Her modest upbringing shaped Teresa’s worldview, and she is remembered today for her selfless nature, kindness, compassion, and humility. Teresa attended East Detroit high school and graduated in 1990. She went on to dual-major in Political Science and French with a minor in both Economics and Spanish at the University of Michigan. She later pursued a master’s degree in Political Science focusing on Middle East studies from the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1998.

It was while she attended college that Teresa met Zuher in 1992. It was love at first sight for Zuher, having casually observed Teresa, standing on her toes at just 4' 11¾”, hanging a poster with one hand and holding up the glass of the student activity board with her other hand. He knew at that moment that there were few things this incredible woman couldn’t do.

Teresa and Zuher married in 1997 and settled down in Troy, Michigan where they raised three incredibly strong, brilliant, and kind children. Motherhood was something Teresa was exceptionally gifted at. She was naturally nurturing, patient, tender, and loving. She cherished her children, taught them to be resilient, and they each thrived under her loving care.

Teresa had a few jobs before finding her calling as a Montessori school teacher. Connecting with children, guiding them through their formative years, and passionately contributing to their educational success was something Teresa took pride in. Teresa taught at Brookfield Academy in Troy, Michigan over the last 14 years. She loved teaching so much that even after retiring in 2020, the itch to teach was so strong that she made her way back to her students in September 2021.

Teresa was a humble volunteer. If a school event or sports team needed help, they knew they could always count on Teresa. A devout Catholic, Teresa volunteered as a Catechist for more than 10 years. She was well known and loved at the schools her children attended. She enjoyed spending the little free time she had writing.

Teresa is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Zuher Naim Khalaf, and their three beautiful children Maria (23), Matthew (20), and Joseph (18). She also leaves behind her adoring parents, Susan and Brian Johnston, her sister Keri Yerkey (Bob), and her aunt, Mary Ludlow (William). Through marriage, Teresa gained the loving support of her husband’s family, including her father-in-law, Naim Khalaf, and her three brothers-in-law: Hisham, Wael, and Maher (Stacy) – all of whom loved her as one of their own.

Teresa is preceded in death by her late grandfather, Almus Davis, her late grandmother, Mary Juras, her late mother-in-law Almaza Khalaf and a sister-in-law she meets for the first time now in heaven, Mary Khalaf.
