Obituary for Sylvia "Mickey" Clemence

Sylvia “Mickey” Clemence of Waterford died October 14, 2019. She was 84 years old. Mickey was born November 1, 1934 in Royal Oak to Hilda (nee Street) and Harold Hemming. As the youngest of four children, she was the apple of her parent’s eyes.

Mickey was known for her spunk and sense of humor. Pleasant Ridge was her home growing up. Mickey graduated in 1952 from Lincoln High School in Ferndale and went to work as a secretary at Chrysler Corporation.

Little did Mickey know that a boy who lived just a few blocks away would become the love of her life. She married William Richard “Dick” Clemence on April 12, 1957 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Royal Oak and moved to Germany for two years while Dick served in the United States Army.

After returning home from Germany, Mickey and Dick bought a house in Birmingham and lived next door to the owner/founder of the Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, Ed and Rosemary Lynch.

Mickey went to work as a secretary for the Ford Motor Company where she was employed until the birth of her first child. After raising her three beloved sons, Michael, Mark, and Matt, Mickey returned to work as secretary to the deputy superintendent for the Birmingham Public Schools. She loved her job and the people she worked with. Mickey remained at the schools until she retired and moved to Waterford Township in 2002.

She enjoyed a good card game, board games, bowling, camping and traveling in general. Mickey and Dick traveled the world -Europe, Australia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Mickey was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Waterford Township, MI and a devout and faithful Christian. She enjoyed many post retirement activities including gardening, work out sessions with the women of the Senior Fit group, the Red Hat Society ladies, fellow Birmingham Public Schools retiree’s lunch group and her knitting club. Mickey was also very active in her neighborhood and enjoyed interacting with her adjacent neighbors.

Mickey loved being a grandmother and spending time with her 9 grandchildren whom she loved and cherished. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Mickey is survived by her beloved husband, William R. Clemence and sons, Michael (Kris), Mark (Alison), and Matthew (Angela). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrew, Robert, Richard, J.D., Samantha, Benjamin, Tyler, Jenna, and Charlotte, and eight nieces and nephews. Mickey is preceded in death by her siblings, Mary, Winifred, and James.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday, October 18th, 3-8pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 5301 Hatchery Road, Waterford Township, Saturday, October 19th at 10am. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
