Obituary for Suzanne Martin

Suzanne Martin died peacefully May 11, 2018. She was 83 years old. Suzanne was born in Detroit October 12, 1934, to Inez (nee Robinson) and Edwin Longpré. Sue grew up near Bay City, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1956. She taught school and then became a stewardess for United Airlines where she met Bruce, whom she married in 1960.

Sue loved spending time with her family and friends in her favorite locales of Harbor Springs, Orchard Lake Country Club, and about town in Birmingham. She was an ardent and at times pugnacious University of Michigan fan, hater of Ohio State and a grudging supporter of Michigan State once her granddaughter enrolled.

Just to right of Attila the Hun, it was easy to get into a political discussion that would keep family dinners interesting for those willing to don their gloves. Ditto for the topic of religion where her traditional Catholic upbringing was often at odds to our current cultural mores. Here too, Sue could be pugnacious.

In recent years, she became a cheerleader for the beatification of Solanus Casey who had, on more than one occasion, intervened in the life of Sue's mother and uncle in order to cure cancer. In her final hours with us, Sue spoke much about the deeds of Solanus Casey in Longpré family history.

Sue’s bout with lung cancer began in September and we all expected that the pugnacious part of her would prevail. But for this day, a combination of the cancer and its treatment were the victors. However, the fight is not over. She will start the next round in the heavenly realm where she can’t lose. But woe to Ohio State fans up there with her. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Bruce, her son, Christopher, and her grandchildren, Jake and Lane Martin. She is also survived by her siblings, Keith Longpré, Bill (Nancy) Longpré, and Dianne Huffman, and her daughter-in-law, Kelly.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills, Thursday, May 24, 11am. Friends may visit in the chapel beginning at 10:30am.

Memorials appreciated to the Solanus Casey Center, 1780 Mount Elliott Street,
Detroit, Michigan 48207.
