Obituary for Susan D. Dembiec

Susan D. Dembiec, of Troy, died March 2, 2012 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 62 years old. Susan was born June 4, 1949 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to parents Frank and Mildred (neeYuhas) Davis.

As Chief Executive Officer at Canterbury-on-the-Lake for the past seven years, Susan worked many long hours on her passion to make Canterbury the standard by which other senior communities could be compared. Her dedication to all things Canterbury was always apparent and greatly appreciated by the Board of Directors and the staff, as well as the residents and their families. Susan also served on several other Boards that represented the interests of the elderly and their advocacy.

Prior to joining Canterbury-on-the-Lake in 2005, Susan had extensive experience in retirement operations and care, including past positions as Executive Director of Chelsea Retirement Community, Director of Health Services at Henry Ford Village, Regional Director of multi-site hospice agencies, and the Director of Maternal Child Health Services for a national home care company. She also spent many years in acute care settings in pediatrics and neonatal nursing, and served as Director of Nursing of a skilled facility. Susan was a Registered Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. She held a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Masters in Health Administration, and was certified as an Advanced Nurse Administrator.

In addition to her passion for Canterbury-on-the-Lake, Susan enjoyed her family, playing tennis, Tiger baseball, travel, music and dancing. She also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino. It was no secret. She loved playing Blackjack and Craps at the Casino. Susan was confident of her skills and was good at it. She occasionally pulled a few slots for a change of pace, however, table games was her first priority. Susan found great relaxation while aboard cruise ships; preferably in the Caribbean. She loved the tropical weather and took pride in wearing her tropical attire. Cruising the Caribbean aboard a beautiful liner was also an opportunity to play the tables at night.

Susan also enjoyed knitting when just relaxing or on a long flight. She was an avid gardener and loved her two perennial gardens; one in the center of her circular driveway and a second one along the patio in the rear of her home. Guided by a professional landscaping designer, Susan and her husband Dennis enjoyed preparing the gardens by adding annuals and tending to each area carefully.

Susan treasured her family and friends and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Susan is survived by her beloved husband, Dennis Dembiec; Loving sons, Stephen (Angela) Gadlage, Michael Gadlage, and Matthew (Angelika) Gadlage; and adored grandchildren, Kyle, Allison, Dominic and Luke. She is also survived by her sister, Judi Eubank and brother, Doug (Leslie) Davis. Susan is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Midge Davis.

A memorial gathering will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Wednesday 4-8pm. Susans Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, 4580 N. Adams Rd., Troy, Thursday 10am. Interment in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

Memorials may be made to Canterbury on the Lake Susans Garden Fund, 5601 Hatchery Road, Waterford Township, MI 48329.
