Obituary for Shirley Rockentine

Shirley Rockentine died May 11, 2020. She was 88 years old. Shirley was born in Leon Twp., Iowa, in 1931. She was the middle child of three and the only daughter. Her family moved to Mt. Clemens, MI, while she was still young. Shortly after graduating from Mt. Clemens High School in 1949, Shirley met her husband Bruce Rockentine while working at Michigan Bell. They married on October 23, 1954, and shortly thereafter Bruce was transferred to New York Bell Laboratories. Their daughter Crystal was born while they lived in New Jersey.

The family moved back to Michigan and their son Owen was born soon after relocating to Birmingham, MI. Shirley stayed home to care for her family and was actively involved in scouting with both children. The family moved to Bloomfield Hills, MI, in the 1960s. Shirley went back to school at Oakland Community College in 1974 where she earned an Associate Degree. She worked for Oakland Schools as a media support specialist until she retired in 1994. After retirement, they moved to Ortonville, MI, where they tended five acres. Shirley was able to expand on her love of landscaping and gardening.

Bruce and Shirley spent over 20 years wintering in the Gulf Shores, AL, area. They formed many friendships there and were active in the Michigan Club. Shirley enjoyed travel, gardening, and shopping for bargains. She was quite a storyteller as well. They moved to Oakland Woods, a senior community in Pontiac, MI, 2016, and Shirley was most recently a resident of Belmar-Oakland assisted living facility in Troy, MI.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Bruce Rockentine, parents Martha (Eveline) Orr Stone, Raymond (Edgar) Stone, brothers Jack and Patrick Stone, and great grandson Gregory Masterson.

She is survived by her daughter Crystal (John) Dharte, son Owen (Winnie) Rockentine, grandchildren Andrea Dharte, Amy (Robert) Trombley II, John M. Dharte, Katherine (John) Masterson, Nicole Rockentine (Dr. Michael Holmes II), and Patricia Rockentine, great-grandchildren, Robert Trombley III, Oliver Trombley, and Beatrice Masterson as well as Sister-in-Law Beverly Stone, plus many nieces and nephews.

Limited visitation and viewing at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd, Clawson, MI, Friday, May 15, 3 to 6 p.m., and a family burial Saturday, May 16, at Oakview Cemetery, 1032 N. Main St., Royal Oak, MI. A public memorial luncheon will be held at a later date.
