Obituary for Shirley M. Jurek

Shirley Marie Jurek of Troy, died September 15, 2021, peacefully at her home. She was 81 years old. Mrs. Jurek was born October 7, 1939 in Detroit to Steve and Regina Tyranski.

She graduated from St. Florian High School, where she played basketball and met the love of her life, quarterback of the football team Frank (Marvin) Jurek, and would later become his wife. They would spend the first 2 years of their married life in Germany where Frank served with the US Army.

Shirley worked in the accounting field with various Detroit-area businesses including the famous Schmid Haus Restaurant in Warren and the graphic arts company Creative Universal. She raised three adoring sons and was an avid Detroit sports fan, with a special appreciation for Steve Yzerman and Matthew Stafford.

She enjoyed spending time at the cottage that she shared with Frank in Tawas Michigan, hosting friends and family, reading, playing cards and caring for her grandson Steven.

She loved to volunteer her time at St. Mary of the Hills church, window shopping, cooking, traveling with Frank or her sisters, and never missed a high school or college football game when her sons were playing. Her positive outlook on life helped her in her 30+ year battle with cancer.

A selfless mother, loving wife, special grandmother, and loyal friend and neighbor. Mrs. Jurek was deeply loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Shirley is survived by sons Mark (Jennifer) Jurek, Daniel (Ann-Marie) Jurek and Scott (Kandi) Jurek. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Keith, Renee, Samuel, Dylan, and Ryan and her sibling Patricia Karpowicz. She is preceded in death by her husband Frank, sister Bernadine, grandson Steven, and daughter-in-law Michelle Burdo Jurek

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Sunday 4-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Hills, 2675 John R, Rochester Hills, Monday 11am. Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
