Obituary for Shirlee A. Hoski, SSJ-tosf

Shirlee A. Hoski, a dedicated Sister of St. Joseph - Third Order of St. Francis since 1958, died October 13, 2010, at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan. She was 71 years old. Sr. Shirlee was born September 1, 1939, in Hamtramck to Mary (nee Barczak) and Raymond Hoski. She was a classically trained musician and a lifelong teacher. Sr. Shirlee taught at St. Hyacinth School in Cleveland, Ohio from 1964-1966, St. Monica School in Garfield Heights from 1966-1967, and Sts. Peter & Paul School in Garfield Heights from 1967-1969.

In 1969 Sr. Shirlee began her ministry in Michigan. She began at St. Anastasia Parish in Troy where she taught music education from 1969-1972, worked in pastoral ministry from 1972-1982, and was the music director from 1974-1982. She was then minister of music and worship coordinator at St. Clement Parish in Romeo from 1982-1984, and St. Ephrem Parish in Sterling Heights from 1984-1987.

Sr. Shirlee had been working as pastoral associate and music teacher at Holy Name Parish in Birmingham since 1988. She found her work there both demanding and rewarding, spending a great deal of time meeting with families to plan both weddings and funerals.

Sr. Shirlee loved poetry, animals, and the Franciscan way of life. When speaking of all that she was involved with, she would say, I love my life. Its music, its God, its very enriching, and very full. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2009. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Sr. Shirlee is survived by her siblings, Pamela (Ray) DeClerq, Karen (Art) Bucholtz, Mary Ann (Al) Kowalewski, and Gregory (Jayne) Hoski. She is also survived by her beloved friend and companion, Barbara Feleo, SSJ-tosf, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Sr. Shirlee is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary Hoski.

Visitation will take place at Holy Name Church, 630 Harmon, Birmingham, Sunday 3-8pm with a prayer service at 7pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday 10am.

Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.
