Obituary for Sam Stinson

Samuel Vincent Stinson, known by all simply as Sam, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2022 at 85 years of age.

A native of Birmingham, Michigan, Sam was born on July 27, 1936 and enjoyed an idyllic childhood alongside his sister, Karen—raised by doting parents Dorothy and Samuel.

Sam developed a love for the arts early in life, honing an exceptional skill for drawing that he would carry through life.

In service to his country, Sam joined the National Security Agency, always saying he’d rather crack codes than crawl through mud.

In the 1960s, Sam and his first wife Linda became loving parents to two young children, Jennie and Jason. Sam earned a reputation as coolest dad on the block when he painted a baseball field on the street where the kids could play.

Sam’s professional career was spent as a 39-year servant for the United States Postal Service—a job which introduced him to his loving wife Regina. The two bonded over a mutual love for Sherlock Holmes and together, raised their daughter Lauren in a home of cats, art, and love.

In semi-retirement, Sam took up residency as a local celebrity: Sam, the greeter at Sam’s Club—where regulars were welcomed by his warm smile and gift of gab.

Sam’s favorite things in life were the simple pleasures: unhurried conversation over Chana Masala at his favorite Indian restaurant, trips to the zoo, petting one of his cats while a classic movie played, or smoking a pipe from his vast collection.

Most of all, Sam loved to tell stories. And whether he was regaling you about a bicycle trip across England, hijinks with the NSA, or fishing as a boy, (and whether you’d heard the story many times before), you couldn’t help but be captivated by his magnetic joy for life. A life led in dedication to Christ.

He is survived by his wife Regina and their daughter Lauren Milia (Matthew); his daughter Jennie Stinson; his son Jason Stinson; granddaughters Emilia Skurtu and Miranda Stinson; and grandsons Nicholas Stinson, Derick Stinson, and Noah Skurtu.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road, Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 11am. Friends may visit beginning at 10am.

Burial will follow in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Michigan.
