Obituary for Sally Dauer

Sally Dauer, long time resident of Birmingham, Michigan, and Dobbs Ferry, New York, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 1st, surrounded by her loving family. She was 80 years old.

Sally is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, John “Jack” L. Dauer, two sons and a daughter: John L. Dauer Jr. (Lynn M. Huddon) of Sleepy Hollow, New York, James F. Dauer (Nini Mayer) of Birmingham, and Katherine A. Dauer (Brian J. Forster) of New York City, as well as three grandsons: William Jinwoo Dauer of Birmingham, and John L. Dauer III and James T. Dauer of Sleepy Hollow. Sally is also survived by her brother Thomas McGuigan of Chicago, Illinois and Naples, Florida.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, she grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from Chatham University. She began her career in teaching at South High School in Pittsburgh. After moving to New York, she continued her involvement in education as a teacher at, and advisor to, both the Dobbs Ferry public schools and the Sacred Heart School, as a member of the Dobbs Ferry public school board and as executive director of Hudson Valley Day Care Center in Dobbs Ferry. She also worked as a teacher for the Westchester County BOCES adult learning center.

Upon moving to Birmingham, she became a member of the Oakland Literacy Council and tutored foreign-born residents in English as a second language. She also volunteered at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Christ, Our Light Catholic Church in Troy later this Spring.
