Obituary for Ruth Evelyn Schneider

Ruth Evelyn Schneider, of Farmington Hills, formerly of Royal Oak and Berkley, died November 11, 2011 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 87 years old. Ruth was born September 5, 1924 in Dearborn, Michigan to parents Cecil and Alice (nee Stubbins) Barber. As a young girl she spent her summers in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada with her aunts and uncles. Ruth started driving at the age of 14 to help out her family by taking her mother to Canada and picking up her aunts at the train station. She loved to drive and was proud to own her own car.

Dick Schneider first saw Ruth Barber when she was in the 7th grade choir. He thought she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and after dating for 7 years they were married, beginning their life together that would last 68 years. Ruth was devoted to her husband and family. She loved to cook and bake, with her specialties being German potato salad, baked beans, pineapple cheesecake and cranberry orange tortes. Ruth loved Uncle Reds good jokes, her favorite color was red, favorite drink, Liptons hot tea, favorite breakfast meal, sweet role, and favorite pastime: keeping Dick in line.

Ruth loved to travel. She and Dick visited all 50 states, Canada and Europe. They became snow birds, starting out in Clearwater, Florida and then discovered and fell in love with Destin, Florida. Ruth also enjoyed Silver Lake in Traverse City.

An active, healthy woman, Ruth kept very busy. She volunteered at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak for 27 years in the mail room. She loved to shop and was so excited when Northland opened. Ruth was a member of the Buttons and Bows & Dudes and Dolls Square Dancing Clubs. She loved to play Bunko with her friends as well as golfing, walking outdoors and riding her stationary bike. Ruth was a collector of Ron Lee Clowns and also made a beautiful Christmas tree with lights in a ceramics class that is displayed in her house year round.

Ruth was a quite proper woman who was disciplined and regimented in everything she did. She always looked perfect, with every hair in its place, and was an immaculate housekeeper who was very proud of her home. She was always honest and told it like it was. There was no guessing required with Ruth, you always knew where you stood with her. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Ruth is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Richard Dick Schneider; children, Rick (Linda) Schneider and Lana Nelson; grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Adam, David, Steven and Jeff; great-grandchildren, Derek, Matthew, Daisy, Ashley, Austin, Kyle, Drew, Emily and Abigail; sisters, Vivian Hancock and Jean Gritzinger. Ruth is preceded in death by her dear son, Gary Schneider, grandchildren, Eric and Brandon, sister, Lucille Jacques, and brother, Cecil Barber.

The family will receive friends at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Clawson, Tuesday 2pm until the time of the funeral service at 7pm. Interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, 16130 Northland Drive, Southfield, MI 48075.
