Obituary for Ruth R. Gallagher

Ruth R. Gallagher died at her home in Birmingham, July 20, 2016. She was 90 years old. Ruth was born January 26, 1926 in San Francisco, California to Catherine (nee Parker) and Clifford Roper.

Ruth was raised in a career Navy family, a life she loved and spoke of often. Traveling to her was second nature and a passion that stayed with her throughout her lifetime. She was a Navy brat through and through. She christened the USS Redfish submarine the day after her eighteenth birthday. She was so proud of the role the Redfish played in World War II, always referring to it as “my Sub”. She watched one football game a year: The Navy/Army Game (Go Navy!)

Ruth had such fond memories of her years at Punahou in Honolulu, Dana Hall and Wellesley College in Massachusetts in addition to all the Navy bases in between. She was a lifelong student of history and art history, traveling the world and attending every lecture she could find.

Ruth and her family were stationed at Pearl Harbor during the attack in 1941. This ended her idyllic time in Hawaii and she came back to the mainland. She lived there long enough, however, to develop another passion: no shoes! Barefoot was how she preferred to be!

Rare was the stranger she encountered that she did not engage in conversation. She was quite the social butterfly and left a lasting impression with everyone she met. Delightful is a word we heard to describe her more than once.

She led a fascinating life. She was adventurous, patriotic, generous, a fierce protector of her own, a great and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be truly missed by many and how lucky we are to have had her in our lives.

Ruth is survived by her children, Sue Gallagher and Stephen Gallagher, her grandchildren, John, Michael, Patrick, and Rachel Gallagher, and her great-grandchildren, Luke, Nolan, Allie, Colin, Elsianne, and Rylan. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, John Gallagher, son, John (Carol) Gallagher and sister, Catherine Jeffers.
