Obituary for Rose Ann Dunaj

Rose Ann Dunaj of Hazel Park, died May 22, 2011, at Sanctuary at Alexander in Royal Oak. She was 89 years old. Rose Ann was born August 5, 1921, in Detroit, to Ada (nee Elliot) and Ottomar Gahman, the third of four children. Rose Ann worked at Hudsons in downtown Detroit for nearly 20 years and participated in one Thanksgiving Day parade, having the sore feet to prove it.

Rose Ann married Richard Dunaj in 1949, and together they raised 5 children. In addition to their children they acted as foster parents to 12 babies over the years. They moved to Hazel Park in 1956, and Rose Ann enjoyed weekly coffee klatches with her neighbors. She was always ready with a lending hand, an ear to bend, or a shoulder to cry on.

Rose Ann loved to camp, even in the rain, enjoying Smokies, hobo pies and riding the back seat of the familys tandem bike. She was an avid knitter, most famous for baby blankets, afghans and a few choice words for difficult patterns.

Rose Ann volunteered at the food coop in Hazel Park, enjoying the tasks, as well as the folks she worked with. She loved plants and gardening with Xmas cacti being her indoor specialty, and everything outdoors being special.

Rose Ann was a long-time member of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Hazel Park. She enjoyed all the holidays, the big band sound of Glenn Miller, jazz music, and the TV show Dancing with the Stars. Rose Ann thoroughly enjoyed the theater, especially at the Baldwin in Royal Oak. Popcorn and movie night with her grandchildren was a real treat.

Rose Ann was an avid reader and a strong believer in continuous learning and personal growth. She set high goals for herself and for those she loved, always being their best cheerleader. Rose Ann loved all grandkids, babies, brides and dogs and got a big kick out of a spirited birthday ride in a red convertible. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor that sometimes brought both a smile and a bit of a shocked surprise. Rose Ann was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.

Rose Ann is survived by her children, Michael (Teresa) Dunaj, Maryann (Richard) Dunaj-Ring, David (Jeanine) Dunaj, Loraine (Michael) Davis, and Lee (Jackie) Dunaj. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Rose Ann is preceded in death by her husband, Richard.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Wednesday 5-8pm and Thursday 3-8pm. A funeral will be celebrated at Lynch & Sons, Friday at 1pm. Interment in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

Memorials appreciated to Michigan Humane Society, 30300 Telegraph Road, Ste 220, Bingham Farms, Michigan 48025 or Beaumont Hospice, P.O. Box 5802, Troy, Michigan 48007-9620.
