Obituary for Robert E. Toal, MD

Robert E.Toal, MD, of Beverly Hills, died following a brief illness on July 1, 2012 at Providence Hospital in Southfield. He was 80 years old. He was born March 14, 1932 in Detroit, and grew up on Wisconsin Avenue with his brother Leo and his parents, Arthur and Sadie Toal.

At an early age, he started working as a paperboy, but always found time to play whatever sport was in season. St. Francis DeSales Grade School was followed by Catholic Central High School, and then he attended University of Detroit for college. He worked very hard in school it was another way to compete. Bob moved to Chicago for Medical school at Loyola. Soon after, he married Lou Ann Murray in 1957. They enjoyed two years on Cape Cod while he served in the Air Force as a doctor. They returned to Detroit and established his Internal Medicine practice in 1959. In 1967, the family moved to Bloomfield Village where they became part of Holy Name Parish. Bob made sure he was on the golf course every Wednesday and on the tennis court every Thursday evening. His yearly ski trips were a delight. Bob played bridge often, enjoyed his one Manhattan at the end of the work day, and, until he was 78, he played baseball. Bob was a regular at 8 oclock Mass at Holy Name and enjoyed coffee with the men after Mass at the Avenue Restaurant. He was very involved with Angels Place, honing his handy man skills in various homes. Bob could fix almost anything or at least thought he could.

He was the best Dad ever to 7 children, father-in-law to 7 lucky outlaws, and a terrific Grandpa to 16 grandchildren. After Lou Ann died, he was lucky enough to find love again with Nancy Mayer. They filled and shared their lives these past 8 years.

Bob was a man of great faith. He loved his life, he loved his family, and he loved his many friends. He was a wonderful man, and we are all grateful to have shared our lives with him.

Bob is survived by his wife, Nancy Toal. His loving children, Bob (Anne) Toal, Sue (Jay) Deacon, Margy (Mike) Raymond, Jim (Liling) Toal, Maureen (Mike) Brown, Amy (Michael) Hillsman and Sarah (Rick) Krugh; 16 grandchildren; Nancys children, John Mayer, Vincent (Dana) Mayer, Mary Jane (Patrick Skorvitz) Mayer. Bob is preceded in death by first wife, Lou Ann Toal; parents, Arthur and Sadie Toal, and his brother, Leo Toal.

Visitation at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday 2-8pm. Prayer service 7pm. Funeral at Holy Name Church, 630 Harmon, Birmingham, Friday 10am. Friends may visit beginning at 9am. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Memorials appreciated to Angels Place, 25240 Lahser Rd., Suite 2, Southfield, MI 48076, Alzheimers Association, 20300 Civic Center Drive, Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48076 or Loyola High School, 15325 Pinehurst St., Detroit, MI 48238.
