Obituary for Robert Clark

Robert Clark, PhD, FASM, P. Eng., of Birmingham, died peacefully, January 16, 2012, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. He was 85 years old. Dr. Clark was born October 16, 1926, in Toronto, to Jean (nee McDougall) and James Clark, both Scottish immigrants.

A graduate of Toronto University, Dr. Clark received his B.A.Sc. in 1949. He continued his studies at U of T, obtaining his Masters Degree in 1950 and his PhD in 1952. Professionally, Dr. Clark held high level management positions for such companies as Norton, Atlas Steel, National Forge, and Ford Motor Company. He was also a Fellow of the American Society for Metals.

Dr. Clarks love affair with classical music began at home and continued when he took a high school job repairing violin bows for George Heinl and Company in Toronto. He eventually began making his own violins and bows, and to this day many members of the Detroit Symphony use his bows.

In 1952, Dr. Clark married the love of his wife, Phyllis Hallworth, at St. Patricks Church in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

An avid world traveler, Dr. Clark was also a gourmet cook and a former wine expert for La Chaine des Rotisseurs. An avid canoer, he enjoyed exploring Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. He also enjoyed jewelry making, setting raw stones in gold and silver, as well as building and repairing furniture.

He was a proud Scottish-Canadian, who relished his ties to both countries. His favorite author was the Scottish poet Robert Burns.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Dr. Clark will be remembered best as a quiet inspiration and proper gentleman who set a good example for all who knew him. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Phyllis, and his children, Evelyn Weir, Sue (Steve) Witham, and Paul Clark. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Taelor, Sydney, and Cettie Witham, his nephews, Alex (Diane) Keith, Keith (Malin) Clark, Jim (Kathy) Clark, and his niece, Janet Keith.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Thursday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am.

Memorials appreciated to Holy Name School SEED Foundation, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Michigan 48009 or Focus: HOPE, 1355 Oakman Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan 48238.
