Obituary for Richard Whiting Ferguson

Richard Whiting Ferguson of Orchard Lake passed away on October 25, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was 70 years old. Dick was born January 8, 1951 in Detroit to Patricia (nee Whiting) and Hugh Ferguson. He attended Presentation and St. Bede Grade Schools and graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1969. He continued on to the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a Business Degree in 1973, later serving as President of the Notre Dame Club of Detroit. A lifelong student, Dick earned an MBA from the University of Detroit in 1976.

Dick spent many a long afternoon on the golf courses of Forest Lake Country Club and Birchwood Farms Country Club, rarely departing without a won bet or a trophy in hand. Always the socialite, Dick loved to throw a party and hold court over long afternoons and evenings spent at the Detroit Athletic Club. He loved his friends hard, from his childhood chums and Brother Rice classmates to his Notre Dame brothers and friends met later in life. His epic stories and witty jokes will be retold and shared for years to come.

A lifelong enterprise man, when Dick wasn’t traveling, consulting, or starting a business of his own, he spent any spare weekend he could at the University of Notre Dame, reuniting with old peers, hosting “condo-gates” at Ivy Court, and cheering on his beloved Fighting Irish.

Above his business, extracurriculars, and all else, the most important thing to Dick was his family. He was a devoted husband of nearly 50 years to Michele and a dedicated father to his children. He never missed a soccer game, recital, or sock hop. Later in his life, Dick found great purpose in his new role of grandpa, devoting all of his extra time and adoration to his granddaughters and grandson.

Dick will be forever missed and honored through stories told, glasses clinked, and enduring love.

Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Michele and adoring children, Ryan Ferguson, Molly Ferguson (Eric) Moell and Hilary Ferguson (Dayne) Crist. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Fiona and Teagan Moell and Holden Crist, brother, Peter Ferguson and sister, Catherine (Kitty) Kindred. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Patricia Ferguson, and brother, Hugh “Rip” Ferguson, Jr.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Roads) Friday, October 29th, 2-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Saturday, October 30th at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
