Obituary for Richard Walton Smith

Richard Walton Smith of Birmingham, Michigan died peacefully at home May 26, 2017. He was 93 years old. Richard was born on August 19, 1923 in Flint to parents, Vida and Allen Smith.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. Just weeks after he returned from service he married Patricia Ann Shepherd on February 16, 1946; a marriage that would span 71 years.

Richard continued his education at the University of Michigan and was proud to be a Wolverine. He received both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master of Business Administration from U of M. He went on to work as an advertising executive and a college professor and retired in 1987.

Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Smith and his loving children, Patricia (David) Bostwick, Dr. Richard Walton (Rebecca) Smith, II, and Carolyn Smith Sandy. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Anne (Carl) Lally, Katherine (Todd) Glass, Kelly, Richard Walton (Leigh) Smith, III, Kathleen (Justin) Simmons, Charlotte Sandy, Paul Sandy, and Jacob Sandy, his great-grandchildren, Brigid, Ashlynn, Maura, Eva, Justin, Tyler, Vida, Jackson, Lucy, Ford, and Hadley, his niece, Elizabeth Smith Yeats and his nephews, Allen Smith, III, Rutherford Smith, and Calvin Smith. Richard is preceded in death by his siblings, Allen Thornton Smith, II and Robert Kenneth (Mildred) Smith.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 17th at 10:30am at St. James Episcopal Church, 355 W Maple Road, Birmingham, Michigan 48009.
