Obituary for Richard Ray Zawacki

Richard �Ray� Zawacki, of Bloomfield Hills, died April 2, 2012. He was 89 years old. Ray was born September 9, 1922, in Detroit to Katherine (nee Krzyzs) and Martin Zawacki.

Ray grew up in Dearborn, Michigan and graduated from St. Alphonsus High School. He proudly served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Ray married Anne, his high school sweetheart and together they raised a family of eight children. He graduated from the University of Detroit with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked locally for Nelson Company, Reckinger Heating & Cooling, and Skuttle Manufacturing.

He relocated to Marietta, Ohio with Skuttle and was an active member of Rotary where he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. Ray served as chairman of the Washington County Girl Scouts, was a board member for the American Red Cross, a member of the Knights of Columbus and was president of the Birmingham Little League. He was a member at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Beverly Hills and St. Regis Church in Bloomfield Hills. Ray retired in 1984 and has since enjoyed the duties of Patriarch of his far flung family.

Ray is survived by his children, Richard (Claudia) Zawacki, Mary (Gary) Kessler, Thomas (Debbie) Zawacki, Anne (the late Lynn) Lahey, Katherine Zawacki, Daniel Zawacki, Patricia (Thomas) Elzinga, and William Zawacki. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer, Kessler, Kristen (Martin) Henry, Michael (Dagny)Zawacki, Theresa Zawacki, Andrea (Benjamin) Beaton, Sarah (Ryan) Farris, Dezi Elzinga, Erin Lahey, Aimee Zawacki, Andrew Elzinga, Daniel Zawacki, Molly Lahey, Trisha Lahey, and Kelley Elzinga and great-grandchildren, Emma Henry, Eden Henry, Maya Hanner-Zawacki, Noah Senninger, Niels Farris, Laurel Senninger, and Katherine Beaton. Brother of Gertrude Hartman. Ray is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne (nee Kelley) Zawacki and 5 brothers. Visitation at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Tuesday 3-8pm. Prayers Tuesday 7pm. Funeral at St. Regis Church, Lincoln @ Lahser, Bloomfield Hills, Wednesday 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am.
