Obituary for Richard Oakley Lawler

Richard Oakley Lawler, of Birmingham, passed away on April 2, 2018. He now joins his wife of 60 years, Stefanie Eitel Lawler (passed on March 4) in heaven. Richard was passionate about the Ohio State Buckeyes and Xavier University sports. He followed those teams and the Dodgers regularly, always in a baseball hat from one of the schools. He was past president of the local Kiwanis Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and often coordinated fundraising projects for charity. He managed a Kiwanis travel baseball team for years and very much enjoyed spending time traveling to and visiting with his beloved sons and daughters. Richard was passionate about his faith and his God and loved attending Mass as often as possible.

Richard was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and moved to Columbus when he was 17. He finished high school at Aquinas in Columbus, and then earned his degree at Xavier University of Cincinnati. He worked as a systems analyst and computer programmer for General Motor’s Fisher Body Division, and then became a CPA in private business, all while raising six children.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Theron and Catherine Lawler, his sister, Sally Lawler Parker, his brother, William Lawler, his daughter, Barbara Ann, and two grandchildren, Carey Anne and Matthew. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Lawler Blaha, his children Kathy (Wayne) Hill, Margaret (Tim) Michael, Theresa (James) Hill, Chris (Amber) Lawler, Mike (Stacey) Lawler, and Ed (Stacy) Lawler. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren who loved him dearly: David (Lizz) Hill, Jason (Jennifer) Hill, Kelley (Chris) Rose; Todd (Kelly) Michael, Scott Michael; Eric, Sarah and Anna Hill; Elwood, Bjorn, Vaughan, Marian and Winter Lawler; Joseph, Patrick, Dominic, Andrew, and Meredith Lawler; Liana, Ehren and Dahlia Lawler. Additionally, he is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Natalee and Robyn Hill, Xavier and Zeke Hill, Connor Belleau, James and Eli Michael, and Julia Rose.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.), Thursday, April 5th, 5-8pm. Rosary at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 2345 Coolidge, Troy, Friday, April 6th at 10:30am.
