Obituary for Ramona McMaken

Ramona McMaken, age 91, passed away on November 11, 2020 in Birmingham, Michigan.

Born on July 28, 1929 in Pennville, Indiana to Millard and Goldie (nee Stephen) Ireland, Ramona grew up and attended school in Pennville and then went on to beauty school and secretarial school in Fort Wayne. She enjoyed singing in the chorus in community theater and attending dances with her friends. After marrying Robert E. McMaken, she moved to the Detroit area and raised three children: Cynthia, Bruce, and Jill. She later worked as a secretary at Kirk in the Hills church before retiring. She lived in Birmingham for 53 years.

Ramona loved dancing, taking long walks, socializing, traveling, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends. She and her long-time companion and dance partner, Robert Kempf, were often applauded as they danced at Carpathia Club and at outdoor festivals.

Survivors include her children Cindy (Bob) Matthews, Bruce McMaken, and Jill (John) Lewis; grandchildren Julia (Tony) Birdwell, Sharon Matthews, Alexandra (Jon) Kantalis, Jenny Lewis, Anthony (Paola) McMaken, Justin Lewis, and Jaclyn (Nolan) Jakrzewski; great-grandson Miles Birdwell; siblings Marlene Risser and Dean (Emma) Ireland; and many nieces and nephews.

Ramona was predeceased by her parents, brother Gene Ireland, and long-time companion Robert Kempf.

Ramona's family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers at Baldwin House: Amy, Megan, Fay, Kathleen, Jayla, and Brandi and the entire team at A & M Home Care as well as Sharman, hospice nurse with The Medical Team.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, a private service for only immediate family will take place late in 2020. A memorial is tentatively planned for 2021.

Donations in Ramona's name may be made to Birmingham First United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
