Obituary for Peter W. Buchanan

Peter William Buchanan of Berkley, died Friday November 20, 2020. He was 85 years old. Peter was born August 19, 1935 in Detroit to parents Ethel (Nee Dohany) and Philip Buchanan. He grew up in Boston Edison and raised his family in Berkley, MI.

Peter graduated from Cathedral High School in 1954. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Sienna Heights University and had a long career with the Mt Elliot Cemetery Association. He enjoyed helping families research their family genealogy.

Peter was very knowledgeable about Detroit History and loved talking about the Irish immigration to Detroit. In his retirement he was a volunteer docent for the Detroit Historical Museum. He loved the Detroit Institute of Arts and Peter and his wife were long time patrons of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He was very proud of growing up in Boston Edison and enjoyed giving tours of his old neighborhood. Peter was a very social and outgoing person, he loved telling stories and making people laugh, his own laugh was very loud and contagious. He never met a stranger he didn’t like. Peter was a very kind and generous person and he will be greatly missed by many friends and family.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Peggy Buchanan. He is survived by his daughter Meg (Dave) Messina and son Thomas Buchanan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Frank and Philip Buchanan and his sister Josephine Schaefer.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 2345 Coolidge, Troy, Monday, November 23 at 10:30am. Peter will be in state beginning at 10am. Visitation at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd., Clawson, MI 48017 on Sunday from 2–5pm.
