Obituary for Paul W. Czamanske, Jr.

Paul Czamanske was born in Chicago, IL to parents The Reverend Paul and Lydia (Marten) Czamanske. He was the oldest of seven children, Caroline (Duerr), the late William, the late Ruth (Thomas), the late Mary (Taranto), Daniel and Becky (Muscoreil). Paul attended Wayne State University in Detroit where he received a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and was an active member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Upon graduation, he received the prestigious Donnelly Award for outstanding contributions to the university in the areas of leadership and service. He later went on to complete the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.

Also at Wayne, he met Barbara Brummel and they were married in 1951. They moved first to Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, Arizona where Paul was stationed. Two years later they moved back to Detroit and Paul returned to work with Ford Motor Company. The couple would go on to move more than 19 times, mostly in conjunction with Paul’s sales and marketing career with Ford. They especially loved the six years they lived in Europe – in both Germany and England.

One of Paul’s greatest joys was his family, and with Barbara created a large and loving one, all of whom are experts in the art of the handshake. He is survived by their four children: Paul William III of Glen Arbor, MI; Elizabeth Marten (Stoik) of Elmhurst, IL; Peter Marten of Glen Ellyn, IL; and Maria Eileen (Stuart) of McMinnville, OR; their children’s spouses, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Paul was widely known for his outstanding leadership, his warm and generous spirit and for never forgetting a name. He achieved early success in his career with Ford including being the youngest District Manager at the time. He progressed through senior sales and executive positions, eventually retiring as Worldwide Marketing Director of the Ford Division.

In 1983 he founded Compass Group, a Management Consulting and Executive Search firm. Over the years his clients included Johnson Controls, Eaton Corporation and Wayne State. In addition, in 2002 he was awarded the renowned Raynolds Award for Excellence in Executive Search and Strong Commitment to Volunteerism by the Association of Executive Search Consultants. His great passion for his work inspired him to continue to operate Compass Group until 2012.

Throughout his life, Paul was very active and held leadership positions in many organizations, both business and civic. These included the Cornerstone Schools, Detroit Economic Club, Hospice of Michigan, Wayne State Alumni Association Board and Valparaiso University President’s Council. Along with many other accolades, in 1984 he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Wayne State School of Business.

Paul and Barbara were long-time members of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Birmingham, Michigan.

In 2012, Paul and Barbara moved to Elmhurst, IL, to live closer to some of their children. Barbara passed away in June of 2017. Their 67th wedding anniversary would have been June 29, 2018.

Service at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1800 W. Maple Road, Birmingham, MI, Monday, July 2nd at 11am. Friends may visit at the church beginning at 10am. A luncheon for all guests will immediately follow. Private interment at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy MI.
