Obituary for Paul E. Hodges, Jr.

If a day can be the mark of a man then let it be known that Paul Eve Hodges, Jr. passed away at dawn on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018. Father, businessman, and innovator, Paul was a generous man, perhaps best known for his large and boisterous family, his construction business, and his love of innovative technologies.

Paul was born in Detroit, the youngest child of Paul Eve Hodges, Sr. and Johnnie Gladys (Halliburton) Hodges, both of whom preceded him in death. Paul attended military academy in his father’s home state of Tennessee and was later stationed as an officer in the army at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. Paul was joined in Oklahoma by his wife, Thelma Marie (Gill) Hodges, and started his family there before returning to Michigan. He is survived by all eight of his children, 24 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren, a testament to the bounty that surrounded him.

Paul was an entrepreneur who worked at building businesses, primarily in the construction industry through Michigan Building Components. He successfully rode the wave of a booming industry he helped define in the Midwest through manufacturing roof trusses, through innovative design with floor trusses, and through holding the patent on a truss connector plate.

Paul loved bluegrass music, had a keen sense of humor, was good with numbers, was proud of his brood, and never met a rule he couldn’t break. He was a man of his age, and in his passing he leaves a wide wake and the challenge for his loved ones to not only gather in their share of life’s riches, but to create opportunity for themselves and others, especially when and where it may seem there are none.

A Funeral Service will be held at a later date.
