Obituary for Patricia Ann Smith

Patricia “Pat” Smith, affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Nana or Grandma was born in Flint, Michigan on September 13, 1923 to parents Gertrude and Alfred Shepherd. Pat was a longtime resident of Birmingham, Michigan and died peacefully on February 24, 2019 in Rochester Hills. Pat had a vibrant spirit, an extremely kind and thoughtful nature, a tremendous sense of fun, and loved to make people laugh. She most enjoyed attending parties with family and friends and hosted countless dinner parties, birthday occasions, and holiday dinners. Pat loved to bake and made delicious cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.

Pat studied education at Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) and worked for many years as a substitute secretary and special education paraprofessional for the Birmingham Schools. She loved trips up north and to Disneyworld with her family. She traveled extensively to such places as London, Paris, Italy, Ireland, the Caribbean, and took a Bavarian cruise. Pat enjoyed bridge and played the piano every day until she was over ninety-three years old. She was an active member of Questors and the family has wonderful memories of Santa brunches at the Village Club. She also was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham since 1951, serving in many leadership roles including the Vestry, St. Catherine’s Guild, and President of the Episcopal Church Women.

She loved her family and friends dearly and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. At 95 years old, she is survived by her loving children: Patricia (David) Bostwick, Dr. Richard (Rebecca) Smith II, and Carolyn Smith Sandy. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Anne (Carl) Lally, Katherine (Todd) Glass, Kelly Lorenz, Richard (Leigh) Smith III, Dr. Kathleen Simmons, Charlotte (Steven) Rowe, Paul (Lizelle) Sandy, and Jacob Sandy; and also her beloved great-grandchildren: Brigid, Ashlynn, Maura, and Eva Lally, Justin, Tyler, and Vida Glass, Jackson and Lucy Simmons, Ford and Hadley Smith, and was able to spend time with her newest great-grandchild, Caroline Rowe. She is also survived by her nephew William Shepherd and niece Pamela Martin. Pat was preceded in death by many close and longtime friends and family, especially, her beloved husband of 71 years, Richard “Dick” Smith, a WWII veteran, and her siblings Gertrude (Byron) Randolph, Francis Shepherd, William (Mae) Shepherd, Allan (Patricia) Shepherd, and Wilfred (Marianne) Shepherd.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 4th 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 355 W. Maple Road, Birmingham, Michigan, 48009, reception to follow.
