Nicholas Charles Cupelli of Surprise, Arizona and Troy, Michigan passed away November 27, 2019 at the age of 86. Nicholas was born on November 20, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to Mary (nee Bruno) and Joseph G. Cupelli, he was one of 6 children.
A native Detroiter, Nicholas was a graduate of Pershing High School. He was passionate about architecture and upon completion of his degree from the University of Detroit Mercy, Nicholas secured a job at General Motors Design Staff, eventually retiring after 37 years of dedicated service. Within that time, he married Sharron Cupelli (nee Elfes) and went on to have 4 children. He was a very proud Grandpa to 9 grandchildren.
After his retirement Nicholas moved to sunny Surprise, Arizona where he resided for the past 18 years. He was an avid softball player, playing on through his senior years at which time he and his team mates won many championships, including the Senior Olympics. Upon retiring his softball glove at the young age of 78, Nicholas moved on to the gentler sport of table tennis where he was active with the local table tennis club in his Sun City Grand community. He was an accomplished ballroom dancer and continued dancing up until his passing.
Nicholas is survived by his children, Joseph (Jennifer) Cupelli, Mary (Gordon) Platto, Celeste (Robert) Sclabassi, and Michelle (Robert) Cichocki. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Nicholas Cupelli, Adrian Cupelli, and Colette Cupelli, Landon Platto, Tyler Platto, Donovan Sclabassi, Nathan Sclabassi, Sophia Cichocki, and Connor Cichocki, and by his siblings Mary “Dolly” Russo, Edith Latour, and Philip (Diane) Cupelli, and his children’s mother Sharron Cupelli. Nicholas is preceded in death by his sister Frances Eberhardt, his brother William Cupelli, and his dear companion Nancy Fogarty.
Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Clawson, MI 48017, Thursday, December 5th, 2-7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304 on Friday, December 6, at 11:00 a.m., friends may visit at the church at 10:30 a.m. prior to the mass. Private entombment for family will be held Saturday December 7, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
