Obituary for Nancy Garden Hook

Nancy Garden Hook, 91, long time resident of Royal Oak, passed away peacefully in her home in the care of her children on January 7, 2022.

Nancy was born to Kathleen and Dr. Ward McCormick on March 4, 1930. The youngest of 3 children, she grew up in Southwest Detroit, graduated from Miss Newman’s School for Girls and attended Wayne State University where she met and soon married Henry Hook. She lived in Franklin Village for many years making the family home in the town’s historic schoolhouse, to which she continuously put her one-of-a-kind, personal touches.

Her last job before retiring was at Jacobson’s in Birmingham in the children’s department. She did charitable work for Hospice of Michigan and Royal Oak's Meals on Wheels. Her interests included antique collecting, gardening, feeding and watching her birds, knitting with a group of close friends and reading history, biographies and mysteries.

Nancy was an excellent cook and hosted many dinner parties for family, friends, birthdays and holidays. She had a marvelous eye for decorating and design, both home and garden, and was a passionate animal lover, always making room in her home for another pet. She traveled extensively, having visited Rome, Paris, Vienna, Zurich, London, Cairo, New York, San Francisco, several trips to Los Angeles to visit her daughter, Cathy, and most recently to Alaska with her son, Matt.

It can be said that her greatest interest of all was her family and spending time with them whenever possible.

Nancy is predeceased by her husband Henry (2006) and her oldest son, Henry Jr. (2016). She is survived by her children Cathy Hook (Joe Tannous), Martha Hook (Denise Rochna), Matthew Hook (Mark Thiesmeyer) and Rachel Mortenson (Rick); grandchildren Nathan Rapport, Kyle Hook (Harley), Kelli Schaller (Kevin), Ryan Hook and Clare Mortenson; great-grandchildren Whitney, Kyle and Theo.

A private service for immediate family members will be held. There will be a memorial gathering at a future date.

Donations may be made in Nancy's memory to Michigan Humane Society or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
