Obituary for Michael V. Allen

Michael Vincent Allen, devoted father, husband, uncle, brother, son, friend and business partner, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at age 59. Michael was a long-time resident of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Michael's love for his family was at the forefront of everything he did in life. His wife Patty and two daughters, Caroline and Julia, were the center of his universe. His love for them was boundless and true. He was an especially devoted son, sibling and doting uncle -- a true pillar of the large, extended Allen clan.

Michael was born to Jack and Chandra Allen in Chicago, Illinois, on February 6, 1962, and was the fourth eldest of ten siblings. He grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, where he attended St. Regis grammar school and Brother Rice High School. A gifted natural athlete, Michael excelled at basketball and football, and was a member of Brother Rice’s 1981 state championship football team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Michigan State University, where he was a member of the Lamdba Chi Alpha fraternity.

Michael was a well-known restauranteur, and a co-owner of Hoops, Sports & Spirits in Auburn Hills and the Oxford Tap in Oxford. An avid sports fan, Michael was well-connected to Detroit sports franchises and local business and civic organizations, and the gracious host of countless gatherings to watch Lions, Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings and Spartan games and national sporting events. He was passionate about live music and supported a generation of local musicians who played regularly at his taverns. Working with his brother and business partner Jim, he also contributed to numerous charitable causes, catering events and donating his time.

More than anything, Michael was known for his general warmth, generosity and good nature. Incredibly likeable, he always greeted people with a smile and went out of his way to care for others. He had an uncanny ability to show up when needed and always went the extra mile to lend his support to his family and vast network of lifetime friends. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and the community he so loved.

In addition to his wife and daughters, Michael is survived by his sister-in-law Cindy Diroff; his 9 siblings: Kelly, Joseph (Nancy), James, Thomas (Kimberlee), Peter (Nancy), Daniel (Amy), Timothy, David (Nancy), and Elaine (Jesse) Daignault; 22 nieces and nephews: Nicholas and Christopher Tower, Jessica, Kristin, Kevin and Patrick Allen; Jameson, Mackenzie (Emily), Jack (II), Ian, and Michael (II) Allen; Tyler and Aleyshia Greenfield; Bryan (Jessica) and Bradley (Alexa) Allen; Riley Allen; Duke Allen; Isabella Allen; Sarah and Zachary Allen; and Jackson and Mia Daignault; 4 great-nephews and nieces: Nolan, Cecilia (CC), Gloria (GG) and Lilliana Allen; and his loyal canine, Buddy. He is predeceased by his father, Jack Allen, and his mother, Chandra Allen.

Visitation is on Tuesday, September 21st from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Lynch & Son’s Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road, Clawson, MI ( The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, September 22nd at 11am at Saint Hugo of the Hills Catholic Church, 2215 Opdyke Rd. Bloomfield Hills.
