Obituary for Michael Kalugar

Michael “Mike” Kalugar, Jr. of Madison Heights died January 6, 2020. He was 91 years old. Mike was born September 6, 1928 in Lorain, Ohio to Julia (nee Turkus) and Mihai Kalugar.

Three days after his birth the family moved to Detroit where his father was employed. Mike graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit and after graduation in 1948 he entered the Air Force. Mike served as an airplane mechanic on B29 plane and was sent to Okinawa during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of Sargent.

Mike worked at Packard Motor Car Company for 3 years until it closed in 1955. He joined Chrysler Corporation at the Dodge Main Plant and worked there until 1960. He next worked at GM Tech Center from 1960-1963. In 1963 Mike began work as a Supervisor at Chrysler Sterling Stamping Plant and worked there until his retirement in 1988.

Mike attended St. George Cathedral since he was 18 years old. He was very involved at St. George where he was the local AROY President, member of the New Cathedral Building Committee, Parish Council, Men’s Club, Orthodox Brotherhood and a coach for the Cathedral Basketball team. It is safe to say that Mike was known to be a pillar of the St. Romanian Orthodox Cathedral faithful. His presence there will be missed by all who knew him.
Mike was the Field Manager for Madison Heights and also coached Madison Heights Baseball Teams and Spartan Little League Football.

Mike met Lillian “Goldie” Maxsican, the love of his life at Transylvania Park in Detroit where they loved to dance to their favorite song, Moonglow. Following their courtship, they were married June 8th 1957, beginning a marriage that would span nearly 62 years.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lillian “Goldie” Kalugar and children, Michael (Laurie) Kalugar, Mark Kalugar, and Karen (Frank) Persichino. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael (Andrea), Shane, Zachary, Julia, John, Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Leah, Kristina (Adam Probst), Frank, and Anthony, great-grandchildren, Aidan, Philip, Austin, and Alivia. Mike is preceded in death by his sister, Violet Mariutca.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Roads) Wednesday, January 8th, 3-8pm with a Saracusta at 7:30pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, 18405 W. Nine Mile Road in Southfield, Thursday, January 9th at 10am. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Grass Lake, Michigan.
