Obituary for Melvin Rosen

Melvin was born on August 13, 1926 to Ann and Sam Rosen in Brooklyn, NY. After his mother and father were divorced, he became the father figure in the family. His brother had gone into the army and Melvin became responsible for caring for his two younger sisters. He earned an AA degree in Business taking night courses while raising two toddlers. He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Natalie Rosen (nee Wenig) with whom he raised 3 children; Ann-Laurie,
Todd and Michael.

Melvin had a gift for sales and made a career first as a salesman working for others and, eventually, owning his own wholesale re-upholstery supply business, Samuel H. Freeman Company. The couple moved to Florida for retirement in the late 1980s and then to Detroit to be near their son Todd as their health declined.

In his younger years he enjoyed playing stickball and basketball. He shared his love of watching football and ice hockey with his children and was an avid do-it-your-selfer when it came to home maintenance.

He will be remembered as an optimistic and altruistic man who loved his family, was an ardent fan of the New York Rangers, an enthusiastic dancer and a person who loved to work out in the yard. He will be greatly missed by the many people who loved him.

Melvin is survived by his three children and their spouses: Ann-Laurie and Fred Hyman, Todd and Elaine Rosen, and Michael Rosen and Susan Mendelsohn. He is also survived by his sister, Roberta Arden, several nieces and nephews and his grandchildren: Jeremy and Mara Hyman, Sean and Kate Rosen, Ilise and Lucas Rosen, Jonathan Baugh, (Rossie Hutchinson), Catherine Sreenivasan, (Raoul Sreenivasan), and his great grandchildren: Jaiden Sreenivasan, Maya Sreenivasan, and Simon Baugh. He was also predeceased by his sister Bernice Kapson and brother Eddie Rosen and many friends from New York and Florida, and cousins from the old neighborhood in Brooklyn.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch &Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Saturday, November 9th at 2pm. Friends may visit beginning at 1pm. Burial will follow in White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.

Donations in memory of Melvin may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 25200 Telegraph Road, Suite 100, Southfield, Michigan 48033 or the charity of donor’s choice.
