Obituary for Maureen A. Ducey

Maureen A. Ducey died peacefully at her home in Bloomfield Hills, February 25, 2011. She was 81 years old. Maureen was born May 16, 1929, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Clare (nee Howard) and Daniel Byrne.

Maureen was raised in a small Irish farming community and attended Catholic schools. In 1946 she went on her very first date with the man who ended up being her husband of 58 years. Both Maureen and Don were seniors in high school. They married in 1952.

Because Don was in the service, he and Maureen lived in Louisville, Baltimore, and Chicago before settling in Detroit. When Don started law school, Maureen stayed at home with all four girls, all under the age of four, and no car!

Maureen was an accomplished seamstress who kept her four daughters looking impeccable in Easter hats and homemade dresses and coats. Always ahead of her time, she maintained a very healthy diet and cooked from scratch with no sugar or preservatives. As far back as the 1960s, she used cloth napkins every night for family dinner to cut down on the wastefulness of paper products.

Maureen had a deep appreciation for the arts, and exposed her children to classical music, literature, and the fine arts at a young age. She also had many personal artistic talents, such as photography, painting, glass making, sewing, and antiquing. She was an avid reader who rarely watched television. She also had a great eye for interior design, and a sense of humor and contagious laugh that will never be forgotten.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Maureen will be remembered best for her kindness, elegance, and love.

Maureen is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Donald, and her daughters, Sheila (Tom) Biehl, Sharon Ducey, Maura (Brian) Plante, and Patsy (Ernie) Castillo. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason Biehl, Bridget (George) Chase, Megan, Kelly, and Eric Plante, and Anne and Erin Castillo, and her sister, Kay Diggs.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Monday 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Church of St. Owen, 6869 Franklin Road, Bloomfield Hills, Tuesday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am.

Memorials appreciated to Alzheimers Association, 20300 Civic Center Drive, Ste 100, Southfield, Michigan 48076 or Everest Academy, 5935 Clarkston Road, Village of Clarkston, Michigan 48348.
