Obituary for Mary Louise Mehelas

Mary Louise Mehelas died May 15, 2012, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 84 years old. Mary Louise was born May 19, 1927, in Herrin, Illinois, to Erminia (nee Zarinelli) and John Berra. Her parents were from Northern Italy and Mary Louise had a strong love of her Italian heritage.

She loved sports, baseball and football in particular. To this day she read the sports page cover to cover and could tell you the lineup of the 1934 Detroit Tigers. Mary Louise gave 22 years of excellent service as a teacher assistant, lunch aide and latchkey staff to the Birmingham School District.

A long time parishioner of St. Regis Church in Birmingham, Michigan, Mary Louise had served as chairperson of the Parish Pastoral Council, sharing her time and talent with the parish community. She received the John Francis Regis award in 2008 recognizing the call we all share, the command from Jesus to love and serve one another. She was truly a faith-filled woman, a woman of prayer which sustained her through all trials. She always remembered brothers and sisters in need, even when she did not know them, offering sacrifices for their intentions. In quiet ways, Mary Louise worked to build God's Kingdom by sending notes of encouragement and comfort.

Mary Louise had the gift of really listening and treating others with dignity. She was truly a thankful woman for everything, even the simple things in life. She would say to her family Thank you for making me look so good! She loved her family beyond words, always putting their needs ahead of her own, and of course, she loved her Catholic faith which gave her joy and peace that no one could take away, despite the crosses of daily life she endured.

Mary Louise will be remembered for her compassion, quiet strength, and gentle heart that was filled with caring. A humble servant of Christ, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.

Mary Louise is survived by her children Thomas (Ann) Mehelas, MD, Rosanne (Craig) Berry, Dianne Mehelas, David (Loree) Mehelas, Julianne (Shel) Levine, and Marianne Mehelas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michelle Ann Mehelas, Maria Berry, Koree and Dylan Shay, Lauren Mehelas, and David Michael Levine. Mary Louise is preceded in death by her husband, Emmanuel J. Mehelas sister, Annette Pavlov and brother, Mario Berra.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday 4-8pm. Prayer Service Thursday at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Church, 3695 Lincoln, Bloomfield Hills, Friday 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.
