Obituary for Mary June Montgomery

Mary June Montgomery of Troy, died peacefully August 1, 2011, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 85 years old. Mary was born June 7, 1926, in Detroit to Bridget (nee Rogers) and Patrick Clancy.

Mary was born into a large Irish Catholic family on Withorn Street in Detroit and attended St. David School from Kindergarten to the 12th grade. She was known to walk her younger cousins to school on a daily basis. As a young girl, she enjoyed ice skating with her cousins and learned to drive at the age of 14. On Sundays, the Clancys would have family picnics on Belle Isle, and many summers were spent with cousins at her Aunt Kittys farm in Alpena.

Having wanted to be a nurse since the age of 9, Mary went on to attend nursing school at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on the Boulevard in Detroit. Upon receiving her diploma, she began working in St. Joes Labor and Delivery Unit. On May 28, 1949, Mary married Thomas Montgomery upon his honorable discharge from the United States Navy.

A loving and devoted mother of 11, Mary never lost her passion for nursing. She worked throughout her life, including 22 years in the Nursery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She retired from Beaumont in November of 1983.

Mary enjoyed reading and sewing, and taking her children to cottages in Port Sanilac and Oscoda. She loved water color, especially flowers, and was known for her hand-painted birthday and thank you cards. For 25 years, Tom and Mary spent every winter at Hidden Lakes Golf Resort near Ft. Myers, Florida, where they enjoyed golf and bridge and visits from family and friends.

An accomplished traveler, Mary had spent time all over the world, including Ireland, Scotland, New York, Hawaii, San Francisco, Acapulco, Chicago, Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, Texas, Africa, Monte Carlo, Italy, and even Egypt, where she saw the pyramids atop a camel!

A consummate caregiver, she will be remembered best as a dedicated nurse, devoted wife, loving mother, and adoring grandmother. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Thomas G. Montgomery, and children, Patricia (Thomas) Maxwell, Peg (Thomas) Sokolnicki, Thomas Montgomery, Jr., Cathy Briton, James (Judy) Montgomery, John (Denise) Montgomery, Michael (Michelle)Montgomery, Ed Montgomery, Paul Montgomery, and Rob (Stacey) Montgomery. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and brothers, Harry, Jack, Joe, and Bob Clancy. Mary is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary (Dennis) Hrischuk.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday 4-8pm with a rosary at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opkyke Road, Bloomfield Hills, Friday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
