Obituary for Mary Jo McGough Mason

Mary Josephine McGough Mason passed away peacefully with family at her bedside September 23, 2021. She was 87 years old. Mary Jo was born December 16, 1933 in Detroit to Mary and Howard West. She was raised in Gesu Parish in Detroit with a wonderful community of neighbors and friends. Many have become lifelong friends.

She graduated from Academy of the Sacred Heart, where she was All State in field hockey. She enjoyed learning and playing golf at the Detroit Golf Club. She graduated from St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame with a major in home economics. She started her teaching career in Detroit and pursued her Masters at the University of Michigan. God had other plans for her. While socializing with friends, she met Edward McGough. They were married and had three wonderful children, whom they raised in St Bede Parish in Southfield. She met many great people and made wonderful friends. Her legendary bridge club was formed and on occasion they did play cards.

Mary Jo’s life took a different path with the premature passing of her husband. In her usual fashion, she carried on without complaining or making excuses. She continued her unwavering commitment to her faith, children, family, and friends, serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Beaumont Hospital and a member of the Ladies of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

After her children were grown, she was introduced to William Mason. Mary Jo and Bill both enjoyed a fulfilling marriage. They were very busy with their numerous friends and activities. They traveled with the Nomads and enjoyed golf, especially during the Florida winters at Sawgrass Country Club.

Mary Jo is survived by her brother, Marty (Pat) West, her children, Edward (Tina) McGough, Mary Beth (Dave) Timmer, Marty (Colleen) McGough, her sister-in-law Carol West Condit, seven grand-children, seven great-grand-children, and Bill’s children Mary Lynn (Edward) Callaghan, Julie (Hal) Begzos, Jeff Mason, Amy Mason, and Molly (Andy) Wozniak. She was preceded to heaven by her parents, Mary and Howard West, her brother Howard West, and her husbands Edward McGough and William Mason.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Roads) Monday, September 27th, 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3695 Lincoln Drive (at Lahser), Bloomfield Hills, Tuesday, September 28th at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Memorials appreciated to American Cancer Society or The Ladies of Charity, 2215 Opdyke Rd., Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48304.
