Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Parker

Mary E. Parker passed away December 3, 2017 at her home with her loving family at her bedside. She was born April 10, 1926 in a small coal mining town near Uniontown, Pennsylvania to John & Lottie Sarnowski. Mary was the youngest of 6 daughters (Clara, Lottie, Helen, Anne, & Magdalene). The family moved from Pennsylvania to Michigan when Mary was a small child. She graduated from Hamtramck High School in 1944 and worked in secretarial positions.

She met her future husband, James L. Parker, at her sister Helen’s wedding. Jim & Mary were married in May of 1950 and lived in Detroit. They had two daughters, Carol & Susan. Jim & Mary built and moved to a retirement home on Five Lakes, Farwell, MI in 1986. Mary continued to live in the residence after Jim’s death.

Mary is survived by two daughters: Carol (Bill) Whalen of Hendersonville, TN and Susan Parker of Farwell, MI; four grandchildren: Mary (Michael) Sweeney, William (Kate) Whalen, Jr., Sean Whalen, and Scott Whalen; and three great-grandchildren: Avery, Riley and Logan Sweeney. She is also survived by one sister, Magdalene (Walter-dec.) Kmiecik and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary loved spending time with her family members and enjoyed quick trips throughout Michigan with her daughter to see new places and/or go out for lunch. She was avid reader and enjoyed decorating her home for all the holidays. She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Clare, Michigan.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon, Birmingham on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Interment will follow at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Michigan.
