Obituary for Marilyn Bertacchi

Marilyn Anne Bertacchi of Birmingham died peacefully October 24, 2012, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 65 years old. Marilyn was born August 8, 1947, in Highland Park to Anne (nee Koltuniak) and George Gojkov.

Marilyn grew up in Detroit and attended Girls Catholic Central High School. She went on to receive her Secretary degree from the University of Detroit. While vacationing in Hawaii, she met Mark Bertacchi, who, fortuitously, was also from Detroit. Marilyn and Mark fell in love and were married April 24, 1976.

For many years Marilyn served as administrative assistant to Wayne County prosecutor William Cahalan; however, her greatest professional joy came from her job as Holy Name church secretary. Marilyn was deeply loved by the entire Holy Name community and well known for her competence, patience, kindness, and courage. When most would have stopped working, Marilyn was determined to carry on.

A two-time cancer survivor, Miraculous Marilyn endured chronic illness with grace and faith. She never complained and always put others first. She loved life and all that it had to offer: animals, especially her cats, music, traveling, gardening, sailing, Bible study, volunteer work, Manresa retreats, dark chocolate, wine, and much more.

A devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, Marilyn Bertacchi will be remembered best for her love of others, her generosity of spirit, her quiet wisdom, her bravery, and her abundant faith in the goodness of God. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Mark, and her children, Elizabeth and Benjamin Bertacchi. She is also survived by her siblings, Joanne Connors and Andrew (Beth) Gojkov, her sister-in-law, Cindy Zackey, her godson, Jason Zackey, her nephews, Stephen and Alexander Gojkov, and her special cousin and friend, Nancy (Mark) Blazevic. Marilyn is preceded in death by her brothers-in-law Jim Connors and Al Zackey.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Sunday 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Monday 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am.

Memorials appreciated to Ladies of Charity-Society of St. Vincent DePaul, 16800 Trinity, Detroit, Michigan 48219 or American Lung Association, 25900 Greenfield Road, Suite 610, Oak Park, Michigan 48237.
