Obituary for Margot Ward Schlegel

Margot Ward Schlegel passed away at home November 4, 2018, surrounded by family. She was just five days away from her 90th birthday celebration. Born to Ward and Margot Wheelock in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 9, 1928, Margot married Richard “Dick” Schlegel from Reading, Pennsylvania in a ceremony in England in 1949.

She was the mother of Mark (Kitty), Mike (Cynthia), Margot Cromack (Doug), Matt (Nancy Dewan) and Amanda Cockels, and the grandmother of Hannah Koegler (Jeff), Emilie Smith (Ryan), Daniel, Drew, Chris, Ben, and Allison Schlegel, and Margot Anne, Phil, and Ellen Cromack. Margot is survived by her brother Keith Wheelock, but was predeceased by her beloved husband Dick and youngest brother Ian Wheelock.

Margot moved her family to Michigan in 1965 in support of her husband’s career at Detroit Country Day School, where he served as headmaster from 1966 to 1984. Margot served as both Dick’s and the school’s biggest booster, tirelessly performing as hostess, gardener, transport driver, dinner provider, and friend to innumerable faculty, staff and students. She was a longtime member of the Birmingham Athletic Club, Village Club, and Nativity Church. After many years at her family’s various vacation homes in Vermont followed by years as a “snowbird” splitting seasons between Michigan and Florida, Margot enjoyed her final years at Samaritas Senior Living of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

A celebration of Margot’s life will be held at Christ Church Cranbrook, 470 Church Rd, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am.

Memorials appreciated to OATS, 4920 Groveland Road, Groveland Township, MI 48462.
