Obituary for Lucia Oniu

Lucia Nina Vanciu Oniu of West Bloomfield, died peacefully December 21, 2017. She was 88 years old. Lucia was born December 2, 1929 at home on Orleans Street in Detroit to Juliana and George Vanciu. Along with her parents and brother she lived with her dear grandmother, Vilma Popp.

Lucia married Dimitrie “Dan” Oniu on May 26, 1956. Lucia and Dan were the second couple to be married in the new church in Detroit.

Lucia attended Highland Park High School and Highland Park Junior College. She left school to work for her Uncle John Popp at Nu-Car Driveway. She then worked for Liberty Mutual Life Insurance Company before working at the Ford Motor Company until her retirement in 1993. Her last position there was the Executive Secretary to the Vice President of Finance.

As a girl Lucia loved to read, ice skate, and go downtown Detroit to shop and see movies. She took voice and piano lessons and loved to sing in the church choir, even playing the organ occasionally for the choir. She was a Detroit sports fan and loved watching the Red Wings, Lions and the University of Michigan.

Lucia served as secretary for the Ladies’ Auxiliary, church council and ARCA – American Romanian Catholic Association. She loved to cook but especially loved to bake. Lucia was fond of nut torte and her grandmother’s apple strudel. She was known for bringing a Jello mold to every holiday or party. Her Jello has been missed the past couple of years.

A few months ago Lucia played her beloved piano for the last time. She was also able to enjoy two Romanian foods in her last days. One night she asked if there were any chiurigua left. She ate two and when she was told she had powdered sugar all over, she smiled. Lucia also recently enjoyed some scovairzi clatile/crepes.

A very private person, Lucia loved her family, lifelong friends, and most of all her church. The Oniu family would like to give special thanks to Henry Ford Hospice and to Lucia’s nurse, Frederica Grassi.

Lucia is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Dimitrie “Dan” Oniu and children, Melissa (Robert) Lurie, Tim Oniu, and Lisa (Thomas Gnesda) Morrison. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Timothy (Jennifer Walkaus) Naumann, Robert (Melissa Joy Larson) Lurie, Jason (Nechama) Lurie, John Lurie, Matthew Morrison, and Lauren Morrison, great-grandchildren, Evalene Rose Naumann and Maya Joy Lurie, sister-in-law, Barbara Vanciu, brother-in-law, George Oniu, nieces and nephews, Christopher Vanciu, Peter Vanciu, Margaret Dixon, Carole Snow, Douglas Onieu, Dan Onieu, Gregory Oniu, Rosemary Oniu, and Dianne Boyd, cousins, Ann Klanchar, Traian Vancs, Valeria Slack, Carolyn Lindow, Violet Vestevich, and Patricia Raezler and godchildren, Gust Schvarkopf and Lori Gross. Lucia is preceded in death by her brother, Cornelius Vanciu.
